Governor Rendell Announces Start of Emergency Unemployment Compensation

Tens-of-thousands out-of-work Pennsylvanians will be eligible for additional unemployment compensation benefits because Governor Edward G. Rendell has signed an agreement with the U.S. Department of Labor to administer the federal emergency unemployment compensation program.

Federal legislation was signed June 30 to provide up to 13 weeks of emergency unemployment compensation to eligible claimants. Pennsylvania employers will not be charged with additional contributions to fund these extended benefits.

"This is positive news for our citizens during these uncertain economic times," Governor Rendell said. "These new funds will help Pennsylvanians - who are unemployed through no fault of their own - continue to pay for food, housing and other necessities for their families and themselves as they seek to reenter the workforce."

Over the next two weeks, potentially eligible claimants will be contacted via mail with information and instructions on filing for emergency unemployment compensation. The department asks that claimants allow at least two weeks for the delivery of the eligibility notices. If claimants have not received a notice by July 20, and believe they are eligible, they can call their Unemployment Compensation Service Center. Additional information will also be available online at www.dli.state.pa.us.

Individuals are reminded that the Department of Labor & Industry will never require claimants to share personal information via e-mail or text message.
